Now that May is drawing to a close and the forest is overflowing with things to eat, the young buck that spent the whole winter shivering in hunger has completely lost his fear. Near the entrance of the woods, where the sunlight comes in well and tender new shoots are everywhere, this little fellow sticks his head into the greenery and doesn’t even flinch when I walk right up to him and point my iPhone to take a picture.
Hey, you rascal — you’ve already forgotten how cold and hungry you were, haven’t you? You’ve decided humans won’t harm you, and now you’ve lost every last bit of caution. One day, you’re going to get yourself into real trouble. Those two little antlers on your head have already grown to about the length of a thumb, and someone who’s fond of deer velvet might decide to go after you.
