Yesterday I had the joy of attending the retirement ceremony of my son‑in‑law, Colonel Joshua of the United States Air Force. I was also present years ago when the Air Force hosted his promotion ceremony to colonel—a truly honorable occasion—but this retirement ceremony moved me even more deeply.

 

What impressed me most was the congratulatory address delivered by Major General Trent C. Davis, Joshua’s former commanding officer at the Pentagon. Without a script, he walked back and forth across the stage, recounting Joshua’s entire life story and highlighting the unmistakable guidance of God throughout his journey. Watching a leader honor his subordinate in such a dignified and heartfelt way—ensuring that he finishes his service with glory—left a profound mark on me.

 

Having spent many years in organizational life in Korea, receiving recognition and even awards, I still found this scene strikingly unfamiliar. It is rare in Korean corporate culture for a superior to attend a subordinate’s retirement ceremony and elevate that person with such respect. Moments like this reveal something of America’s strength, and perhaps even more, they reflect the essence of biblical leadership.
