My wife has been away for the past four months to care for our newborn grandson, Cyrus. Today I decided to take her for a walk in the woods. It felt wonderfully comforting to stroll together again after such a long time. Though the weather was hot, the forest was cool even in the middle of the day, making it pleasant enough to walk. Compared to Nashville, TN two weeks ago, or Centreville, VA where we stayed until just a few days ago—places where walking in the woods at midday is nearly impossible—the heat in New Jersey has already begun to ease, and the forest is refreshingly cool by comparison.
Around this time of year, I usually enjoy spotting chicken mushrooms and maitake mushrooms sprouting here and there. But today, mushrooms were surprisingly scarce; I found only three small chicken mushrooms. Still, what mattered most was simply walking through the woods with my wife.
Ah, how true God’s Word is. He formed Adam first, and declared that it was not good for the man to be alone. Then He fashioned Eve from Adam’s rib and gave him a companion. Today, I felt the truth of that deeply.
